    At 0:43 you state "you play a 60 gram extra stiff shaft", and later you state your swing speed at 102. Can you explain the reason for playing an extra stiff shaft.

    • @DevotedGolfer
      @DevotedGolfer 3 месяца назад

      We play what creates consistency in swing and ball placement. Notations on shafts, stiff, extra stiff, etc are just notations that tell where that shafts ranks in that models weight, 6R is softer than 6S which is softer than 6X. But in some brands, R, S, X are rankings in weight, in other brands, they represent stiffness regardless of weight. For Mark, in that particular shaft profile, 6X was his best fit. Stiffness ranking on a shaft has little to do with swing speed. For a deeper understanding of golf shafts you should go to www.golfshaftreviews.info.

    I came from a background of playing the S300/S400 and when I switched to the X100 as a "graduation" for my speed and power, it definitely felt dead. I had felt stuck in between these two shafts because I loved the firmness of the X100, just not in the handle, but I loved the bending style of the S300 and R300 shafts. Ended up testing out the 120X and it was probably the perfect combination of everything I liked about the 3 dynamic gold shafts, a softer handle, a mid section that bends but doesn't get overwhelmed, and a stable tip section that delivered the loft appropriately and face consistently into the ball. I think as a better player it tends to get lost on people just how important it is that a shaft fit your swing dynamics, since they're so used to a fitter just giving them a random shaft, and then the player spends most of the time trying to fit their swing into it as opposed to the shaft complimenting their swing and being under total control. If you're ever feeling like you're stuck and hopeless about improving the numbers when you think you got your swing figured out, a shaft tune-up is likely all you really need.

      Your personal experience is so valuable for those in search of a better game. A golf shaft can enhance your game or force you to accommodate your swing to it. A shaft fitters knowledge and experience are important in their ability to find the right shaft for your golf objectives. Unfortunately there are many that claim to be fitters that lack the knowledge and experience to perform the the art of club fitting for the talented, physically literate golfer.

    I recently watched expert fitter Simon Cooper of Precision Golf Ltd near London, who also played as a +1 hdcp amateur and on the EuroPro Tour and Challenge Tour, fit a very good amateur, Todd Adcock, with a Callaway Paradym triple diamond 8 degree driver and an Accra TZSix 60 M flex shaft that weighs just 56 grams (mass) with 2.5 torque. Adcock got club speed 120, ball speed 178, launch 13.8, spin 2160, attack angle 8.0, carry 305, total 325, which would put him well up in the driver stats with the big boys on the PGA tour. That seems to be an extremely light weight combined with very low torque. Does Graphite Design have a shaft with similar specs? Most of them seem to be slightly higher weight with higher torque.

  • @johnk.atchley5079
    @johnk.atchley5079 Год назад

    At minute 25 to 28, Mark Maness and Erik Boysen comment re seeing less hybrids and more 5 woods, you can add 7 woods and even 9 woods to gain height and steep descent angles on long par 3s and approaches to par 5s to get the ball to stop. This of course is not for open links courses with lots of wind where the ball can be run onto the green so lower trajectory works fine, making driving irons and long irons effective.

    I have Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 6S and Tour AD IZ 5R-1 shafts for my Callaway GBB Epic Sub Zero 10.5 driver. Got both and the head when the pro shop where I go dismantled the fitting cart for that model year as Callaway had come out with two later models. Was fortunate to get an incredibly good deal. The shafts are great, have been using the stiff but just decided to change to the regular since I will be 82 in June. I would try an IZ 4S if I could find one at the super low price I paid for the other two, but that is not likely. I play forged blade irons and am in the process of going from my present 120 gram Royal Prestige Rifle Lite stiff shafts to a lighter shaft. Will keep the first set and buy a second set of the same heads, Chicago Classics by Evans Design which are nearly identical to a Mizuno MP-33, from the pro at my range who years ago had a supply of these heads forged in Taiwan that have been sitting in boxes under the workbench in his shop. At the moment am considering NIppon NS Pro Zelos 8 stiff shafts at 87.5 grams 2.2 torque or Zelos 7 stiff at 77 grams 2.3 torque. To try them I have to buy a shaft and have a club made since there are no fitting connectors. Throwback mode. I would love to try the Graphite Design Tour AD 75 iron shafts at 78 grams 2.8 torque but the cost is simply prohibitive, nearly four times as much per shaft, $130 versus $34. Ah well, such is life.

    Very useful. I am interested in the Zelos shafts but it is very hard to find any tests or reviews, or fitters who carry the Zelos, at least where I live in Rockville, Maryland. I am playing forged blades very similar to Mizuno MP-33s that are not a major brand and no longer produced but that the pro and club fitter I go to has a supply of, so in order to determine which shaft might be better for me, I need to buy one from Golf Works, buy another 7 iron head from my pro (very inexpensive) and have a club made to try out. I currently have Royal Precision Rifle Lite steel shafts in stiff flex. But as I will be 82 in June, they are almost certainly a little too heavy and stiff and so I am looking for a lighter shaft. I purchased a Zelos 7 for a 7 iron and had a club made, with good results. I tried to buy a complete set of Zelos 7 shafts but GW says it does not have them all. So I have now purchased a Zelos 8 stiff flex for a 7 iron and will try that out. The Zelox 7 weighs 77 grams, the Zelos 8 weighs 87.5 grams, so either one is considerably lighter than my Rifle Lite 120 gram shafts and should be easier to swing. This video is now 7 years old, so I doubt there will be any reply, but it was the best one I found so I added this comment.

    Could you please tell me what a softer butt section in the shaft does during the swing and in the swing feel? I would think it would feel like the shaft and head was lagging behind. Also, I would think it would be a little more difficult to close the face. What is the design intent in a soft butt section?

    • @DevotedGolfer
      @DevotedGolfer Год назад

      Swing style and feel are critical for developing a consistent swing. There are some very popular soft butt shafts. For example, the Project X is soft butt compared to KBS or Dynamic Gold designs. When looking at soft butt realize you are comparing it to the midsection of the shaft. If I look at different shafts overall stiffness I could say one shaft has a softer butt than another because its overall stiffness is less. The term is relative. The MCA 1k has a firm mid. So one could therefore see the butt as soft. And yet, I have put this shaft into a great many low handicap bags. When I locate weight and overall stiffness for a players iron shafts. I always test both PX and KBS. Players always have a preference. And that preference does not manifest in dispersion as your thoughts would indicate.

      @@DevotedGolfer Isn't how you load the club that basically determines what butt profile one should play? Such as a player with a smooth transition /load would be better off with a soft Butt profile, and an aggressive transition/load player would require a firmer Butt, or visa versa? Why softer or stiffer sections would benefit certain types of players. Is it tempo related, loading related? I don't know, just curious. Thanks, and nice interview!

I've only had to replace two grips, EVER, and that was because mishandling (my bad) eventually ripped little tears in them at the end where it meets the shaft. Didn't hurt playability at all, except when I occasionally gripped down there. I can absolutely endorse this product! And a great video, Russ, to spotlight it.
